History of the Jumble
The word jumble was invented by Martin Naydel in 1954. It originally appeared under the title "Scramble." Naydel was an editor for the Chicago Tribune newspaper, and he created the word jumble as a feature for the newspaper's Sunday edition. The puzzle was an instant hit, and it quickly became a popular feature in newspapers and magazines around the world.
The current version found in most daily newspapers has four jumbles or anagrams, two of five letters and two of six, followed by a clue and a series of blank spaces into which the answer to the clue fits. The answer to the clue is usually a pun or homophone.
