Ulysses' Gaze (1995)
Ulysses' Gaze (Greek: Το βλÎμμα του ΟδυσσÎα, translit. To Vlemma tou Odyssea) is a 1995 Greek war drama film directed by Theo Angelopoulos, and starring Harvey Keitel, Maia Morgenstern and Erland Josephson. It is loosely based on Homer's epic poem Odyssey.
The film was selected as the Greek entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 68th Academy Awards but it was not nominated.
The actor Gian Maria Volonté died during the filming. He was replaced by Erland Josephson and the film was dedicated to Volonté's memory.
Plot
A (Keitel) is a Greek filmmaker living in the United States who returns to his native land. There he begins searching for the legendary lost reels of footage shot by film pioneers the Manakia brothers, who journeyed throughout the Balkans documenting its culture. As A's search continues, he travels to various places that stir memories from his youth. He fantasizes about his mother (Morgenstern) and the women from his films, unsure of his own ability to see things clearly.
